The Discount Trap: Why Coupons are Killing Your Massage Business (and What to Do Instead)

Scroll through Instagram or Facebook on any given Tuesday, and you’ll see them:

  • "10% off for new clients!"

  • "40% off Spring Special!" * "Two 60-minute sessions for $99!"

While these posts come from a place of wanting to fill an empty calendar, they are often the first step toward burnout and business failure. At Massage Business Academy, we teach you how to stop "Mindlessly Discounting" and start "Minding Your Business."

1. You are Training Your Clients to Devalue You

When you offer a 40% discount, you aren't just giving a deal; you are telling the world that your time isn’t actually worth your full rate. You are attracting "Bargain Hunters"—clients who only book when there is a sale. These are rarely the loyal, "soul-aligned" clients who stay with you for years. They are simply waiting for the next therapist to post a cheaper special. Once you start the coupon cycle, it is incredibly difficult to raise your prices back to a professional level without losing your entire client base.

2. The Math of Burnout: Are You Actually Paying to Work?

Let’s look at the "2 for $99" special. If your standard rate is $120 per hour, you are essentially working for **$49.50 per session**. Most therapists look at that number and think, "Hey, $50 an hour isn't bad!"

But let's look at the Real Math:

  • Gross Pay: $49.50

  • Self-Employment Tax (approx. 15%): -$7.42

  • Gas & Vehicle Wear (if mobile): -$8.00

  • Supplies (Linen service, oils, creams): -$5.00

  • Software/Insurance/Admin: -$4.00

  • Net Profit: $25.08

After taxes and overhead, you are making just above minimum wage for a job that is physically demanding and requires a professional license. To make a 6-figure income at that rate, you would have to physically break your body working 40+ hands-on hours a week. That isn't a business; it's a high-stress hobby.

3. Stop Trading Time for Money

One of the core pillars of the Massage Business Academy is learning how to build a business that supports you, even when your hands aren't on a client. When you are a "Generalist" therapist, you are trapped in a one-to-one trade: one hour of work for one hour of pay.

Through the Academy, I teach you how to integrate Specialty Products and Passive Income. For example, my own brand, Peaches by Wrthit, features the Bellini BBL Pillow. This isn't just a product; it’s a solution for post-op clients. By offering specialized products that solve a specific problem, you increase your profit per client without adding more physical labor to your day. This is how you move from "Massage Worker" to "Business CEO."

4. The "Specialist" Doesn't Need a Coupon

Think about it: Does a specialist surgeon offer a "BOGO" on Tuesdays? Does a high-end luxury brand have a "40% off everything" sign in the window? No. They offer Value and Solutions.

The antidote to discounting is finding your niche. When you become a specialist—whether it’s in Post-Op Lymphatic care, clinical sciatica relief, or prenatal wellness—you stop being a "commodity." You become a solution. People don’t look for coupons when they are in pain or recovering from a major surgery; they look for the expert they can trust.
